Part of the village was built on the western slope of Nyulászó Hill, which, due to its proximity, also served as a popular location for rabbit hunting, a favorite pastime of the nobility. Even today, it’s not uncommon to see rabbits wandering nearby, often stalked by ravens. Our historic cellar system, with its 109 branches, lies deep beneath this vineyard hill, preserving our aging wines.

GEOGRAPHY AND GEOLOGY

Nestled on a 200-meter-high hillside at the southeastern edge of Mád, the Nyulászó vineyard may be the youngest historically, but it stands among the finest in character. With gentle slopes facing all directions, the vineyard enjoys abundant sunshine and warmth. Located at the crossroads of several volcanic formations, it brings together all the rock types found in Mád’s famed hills. The soil is mostly heavy brown forest soil, with higher areas composed of yellow clay. Beneath the surface layers of weathered rhyolite and bentonite can be found, occasionally mixed with scattered quartzite stones.

A PERFECT SINERGY BETWEEN VINEYARD AND GRAPE VARIETY

Approaching from the south, visitors are greeted by one of our estate’s oldest parcels, where 65-year-old vines stand. Holdvölgy cultivates six distinct parcels on three different exposures of Nyulászó.
Our Nyulászó parcels are dedicated exclusively to muscat blanc a petits grains (Sárgamuskotály), a variety particularly well-suited to this terroir. Here, we apply a precisely tailored viticultural approach that meets the specific needs of the grape. This exceptional harmony between site and variety is reflected in the results: since 2008, five late harvest wines from Nyulászó have been awarded gold medals at the Muscats du Monde, one of the world’s leading competitions for Muscat wines.

Further details on our parcels located in Nyulászó

Total area: 7.6 hectares
Varieties: mainly Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains (Sárgamuskotály), Furmint, Hárslevelű
Planting years: 1955, 1979
Exposure: South, South–West, South–East
Slopes: 5–15%
Altitude: 155–199 meters above sea level
Soil & bedrock:
Predominantly heavy, brown forest soil.
