THE MOST EXTENSIVE CELLAR SYSTEM OF MÁD

The current cellar system was created by connecting nine separate branches. Initially, it was under state ownership and facilitated formal meetings for Soviet and Hungarian delegations. Deals were made during tastings of Tokaji aszú.

CELLAR RENOVATION

The renovation process lasted 23 months, from 2011 to 2013. During this time, not only was the cellar renovated, but a new winery and showroom were also built to create a minimalist complex characterized by clean lines. This design choice was made to ensure that the structures blended seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and established a direct connection between the winery and the cellar system.

Experience

A HOLDVÖLGY Experience-t úgy alkottuk meg, hogy a Budapestről induló utazástól a mádi borkóstolókig minden részlet összehangoltan szolgálja az Ön kényelmét. Levesszük a szervezés feladatát az Ön válláról, így a nap során figyelme megosztottság nélkül irányulhat a birtok boraira és történelmi dűlőire. Önnek csak át kell adnia magát a felfedezésnek – a teljes körű lebonyolítás a mi felelősségünk.

GEOLOGY

10-million-year-old volcanic traces

The stones in the cellar system were formed by several large volcanic eruptions in the past. The best signs of these geological processes can be observed on the bottom level of the cellar. Along the tour route, the walls are mostly covered by noble rot, but remnants of this 10-million-year-old phenomenon remain visible. A unique feature of the Rhyolite cellar walls is the presence of the Cladosporium Cellare fungus, found only in the Tokaj wine region and the cellars of the Rhineland. This fungus plays a significant role in the aging and quality of Tokaj white wines, mainly due to its ability to control humidity.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

OPENING HOURS

Our estate is open every day: Sunday to Thursday from 10 am to 3 pm, Friday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Please note that our opening hours may be modified due to maintenance, events, and public holidays. Before planning your trip, we kindly ask you to check our Google Business account or the website for updates. Our winery is always closed on the following days: 1 January, Easter Sunday and Monday, 1 November, 25-26 December.

BOOKING

You can book your visit via email (visit@holdvolgy.com), phone +36 70 391 46 43 or on this website using our online booking form. Our colleagues responsible for hospitality and guest experience will do their best to contact you within 1 day of your inquiry.

TOUR LENGTH AND AVAILABLE LANGUAGES

The duration of cellar tours is approximately 1.5-2 hours. The Tokaji aszú wine tasting experience always lasts over 2 hours due to a special seated program. Available languages: English and Hungarian.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

All four programs include a visit to the showroom, the wine-making facilities, and the cellar. Our treasure hunt experiences always focus on the cellar. A map is also included to help you find the wines in the labyrinth, and our colleagues will provide you with all the historical facts about the place. The Aszú tasting experience is slightly different. It involves a shorter tour of the winery and the cellar, with a focus on the aszú tasting, which takes place seated in a separate tasting room.

CELLAR CONDITIONS

In the cellar, the temperature is consistently around 12°C (53.6°F) throughout the year. We advise wearing a sweater or jacket when visiting. Additionally, some hallways and areas of the cellar may be wet and slippery, so it's essential to wear appropriate footwear.

HOW TO GET THERE

Our estate is located at Árpád Street 13, right in the center of Mád. The main entrance is accessible from this street as well. Free parking is available within the estate based on the availability of spots. Additionally, you can park on the streets near the winery. It takes a 16-minute walk from the train station and only 6 minutes from the bus stop.

BUYING TICKETS

Tickets can be ordered online with assistance from our export manager and in person at our Estate. Currently, direct online purchases are only available through our Hungarian site and require a Hungarian billing address.

USING AND SHARING TICKETS

The purchased tickets are valid for 12 months and can be gifted away. However, guests must present either their online or offline tickets before the cellar tour. If you purchase tickets using a Hungarian billing address, they will be automatically sent to your email address. Please note that these tickets are not time-bound, except for tickets related to special events and tastings.

PARTICIPANTS UNDER 18

Guests under 18 cannot be served alcohol, but they can still take part in the tour and visit all the facilities free of charge. Children are also welcome, and upon request, we can provide syrup or chocolate for them to search for in the cellar, allowing them to fully participate in the experience.

NON-DRINKERS AND DRIVERS

Tours can be enjoyed without alcohol consumption. However, there will be a charge of 2,500 HUF for adults, which can be used as a coupon in our wine shop.

PARTICIPANTS WITH MOBILITY AIDS

You can safely visit the outdoor spaces, terrace, and showroom with a wheelchair or other mobility aids. Wine tastings can also take place in these areas in special cases. Unfortunately, the cellar can only be accessed via steps, and there are narrow hallways and small stairs that may make it difficult for people with mobility support to move around.

PETS AT THE ESTATE

Pets are welcome in the park and on our terrace; however, due to food safety restrictions, they cannot be brought into the indoor spaces. Currently, we cannot supervise pets during the tours.

GROUND RULES FOR GUESTS

To ensure a pleasant experience for everyone, we expect all guests to follow our code of conduct and participation rules. If you or your company are inebriated and unable to participate in the tour, please remain on our terrace or outside the Estate. To maintain the comfort of our guests and staff during the visits, we reserve the right to ask uncooperative or intoxicated guests to leave the estate. We will not serve further drinks to these individuals.
