THE NAME GIVING VINEYARD

2019-02-10

The mid-century vineyard of Mád, known as Holtvölgy (meaning "The Valley of Death") or Hótvölgy at the time, took its name from the fact that it was located near a cemetery belonging to the neighboring village of Öszöd. The first recorded reference to it as Holdvölgy (meaning "Moon Valley") dates back to the 18th century.

Today, it is one of the grandest and most significant areas among the historical first growth of Mád, covering 45 acres. Simultaneously, it features the most extensive vineyard on our estate at 8.7 acres. The Holdvölgy vineyard surprised us the most, as since its purchase, it has consistently provided us with pristine grapes in every vintage. It gives the fruit for the Estate's most special wine, the Intuition No3., a parcel and clone selected dry Furmint. Finally, many of our sweet Szamorodni lots, particularly the Zéta Szamorodni, would not have achieved such quality without these grapes. Our entire Tokaj wine selection could be derived from this vineyard due to its immense potential and the diverse characteristics of the land. This is why we have chosen the name Holdvölgy as the foundation and brand name for our wines.

GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL FEATURES

It is bordered by the Úrágya vineyard to the east, the Sarkad to the north, and the Középhegy (Middle Mountain) and Újhegy (New Mountain) to the west. Located south of the Holdvölgy first growth, the village of Mád provides the easiest access to the land. The geological literature refers to this area as the Mád climate basin. The region is characterized by quartzite, which consists of rounded gravel. In the lower soil layers, brown forest soil with tuff is prevalent, while the upper levels contain red clay. The area is abundant in flint silt, which is rich in both macro and microelements.
